Wellingborough Town Centre Task Force

Everyone knows that town centres across the country have been changing, from how people use them to what shops populate them. Within a few months of being elected I organised a ‘Wellingborough Town Centre Taskforce’. This group brings together local businesses, the council, police and others to agree on ways to make Wellingborough Town Centre a more inviting place for people to visit.

Safety in the Town Centre

Feeling safe in the Town Centre should not be a luxury. I have conducted two Town Centre Canvasses to speak to local businesses about the issues they have and to ensure they are signed up to the Wellingborough Anti-Social Behaviour Reporting Scheme (WARS).

One of the issues that was raised by the Taskforce was that women and girls do not feel safe in after dark, so I was thrilled that a ‘Reclaim the Night’ march was hosted in Wellingborough after many absent years. Going forward I will be campaigning for it to be a yearly event, hopefully gaining popularity each year and improving women and girls’ safety.

One part of ensuring safety after dark is the lack of street lighting. I have raised numerous lighting issues in Wellingborough Town Centre and Rushden, including at Pebble Lane and the walk way between Morrisons and Silver Street.
